Warmouth
Lepomis gulosus
A rugged sunfish of the Southeast and Gulf states, the warmouth inhabits sluggish backwaters, swamps, and muddy-bottomed ponds where other sunfish rarely venture. Its large mouth and aggressive disposition make it a willing biter that punches above its weight. Often mistaken for rock bass, warmouth are a favorite of Southern panfish anglers exploring cypress swamps and bayou sloughs.
